Harvest Time - 2009 Vintage
It is the business end of the season for all grapegrowers and winemakers in the Margaret River Region. We at KarriBindi are in the midst of harvest for the 2009 vintage. The fruit looks fantastic and both our Viticulturalist and Winemaker are giddy at the thought of the KarriBindi 2009 wines.
News From The Vineyard
We had an unseasonably wet start to the season (even for Karridale) that continued into the flowering period for most grape varieties. This delayed grape development and reduced crop yield. This was then followed by an outbreak of a new pest, not seen before in vineyards. The looper caterpillar is small, green and mostly unremarkable. Being the same colour as the grapes and generally less than 5mm in length made it difficult to locate and identify. The looper moved fast and feasted on small undeveloped berries and stalks. Thanks to our dedicated viticulturalist James Harris we got on top of the looper before it did to much damage. While we still estimate damage at 30%, we are far better off than some of our fellow grapegrowers who believe they have suffered up to 70% crop loss.
While this all seems like bad news, the upside is that the vines had less grapes per vine to ripen and put all their energy and flavours into the remaining fruit. The season soon caught up from the slow wet start and continued on schedule. With little disease pressure since then we are looking at very clean, high quality, perfectly ripened fruit for the 2009 Vintage.
Harvest is underway and after some long nights of picking we have finished harvesting all our white varieties. We anticipate a 7-10 day period before we begin harvesting the reds.
All that being said, with the sun still shining in Karridale the 2009 vintage looks to be a great season for KarriBindi wines and for the Margaret River region.
